I've been bumbling around in the Discworld wiki (
http://wiki.lspace.org/index.php/Main_Page ) and have proved too dumb to
figure out how to contribute articles.

There is a mail list you can join to discuss the wiki, make suggestions
etc to be found here:
<http://lists.affordable-prawns.co.uk/mailman/listinfo/wiki>
Or also you could mail Sanity directly (sanity at lspace org) for some
pointers.
You need to create an account but I'm guessing you have already done
this. The special pages or links in the toolbox might have some
answers:
<http://wiki.lspace.org/index.php/Special:Specialpages>
Also the Discworld wiki uses the media wiki software and the general
help and introduction pages on creating/editing sections on Wikipedia
itself are useful for basics.
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Contents>
However a cut down version of the Help files or an article specifically
written on 'Getting Started' on the Discworld wiki, linked from the
toolbox possibly, could well be a useful first article to contribute
once you have started.

Creating a good "getting started" page is pretty high on my list. I'll
gladly hear from you via e-mail what you found difficult, so I can use
that to help you and other people.
To contribute, you can click the "edit" link which is above each article
(except the few pages that are often radished by spammers). There, simply
change what you want to change. The text may look daunting at first
because special codes are used to format text. Comparing the text in the
edit box and the page itself will show their meaning. If you're done,
press "show preview" to check that it looks like the way you want it, then
"save page" to make the changes visible to everybody.
It's best to start with improving the articles that are there rather than
starting new articles.
Hope this helps. If it doesn't, contact me.
Have fun with the wiki!

It kinda amuses me, in a way, to reflect on the diversity and
unexpectedness of some of the articles I find myself editing on
Wikipedia. I think Daibhid, by contrast, is more of a specialist
editor, i.e. he mostly edits articles about things he's particularly
interested in. I'm not. I do edit some articles I'm interested in, but
mostly, if there's a linking theme, it's probably trivia. I never know
what I'm going to edit next.
I've made significant edits to articles about tropical cyclones,
puddings, sean nós, certain breeds of dog, and so on. Not all of these
topics are trivial or of little interest, but I think the overall lack
of homogenuity has a funny side when viewed in a certain light. Try to imagine a
scene (as perhaps in a hypothetical novel) in which all of
the above topics feature in conjunction, throw in - for good measure -
allusions to writing utensils, Australian state emblems, and obscure
linguistic phenomena, and you might see what I mean.
Feel free to write that scene, if you wish.
Adrian.

This is true. It's true to the point where, rather than detail
all the articles I've done recently, my user-page just lists
the categories most of them are under.

I couldn't find a way to start a fresh article.
I've been researching for a current project, and thought an article on
criticism would be appropriate. There's GoL, and critics other than me have
written stuff. A bibliography of articles and a bestiary of critters was
what occurred to me. I'd write it even if I left myself completely out of
it.

Type whatever you want your article to be called in the Search
box, and click "Go".
You will be taken to a page saying:
"There is no page titled "Discworld LitCrit". You can
<redlink>create this page</redlink>."
Click the red link.
There's probably an easier way, but that's how I do it.

Other wikis, I just [[linkify]] the word, save the page, click on the
freshly created link and it will take me to the "create an article
about this" page if there isn't one already. Write article, save, done.
Wait for the vandals and splitters of bunnies to show up and have fun.

Ugh. Maybe it's not worth it after all.

Well, a discworld wiki is probably safe. See if you can convince the
admin to allow edits only by registered members though.
Also, most wikis, you can simply enter an address like
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Some_topic_that_hasn%27t_been_c overed_yet
and it will take you to a page where there is a link that will start an
article about some topic that hasn't been covered yet.

Actually, that works. I haven't done it yet, but I may when I'm done with
this other stuff.
Wikis are a source of major ambivalence to me. I want to write an article,
but I confess heebiejeebies at the thought of others coming along and . . .
So far when I've gotten stuff into print, they haven't changed anything that
I could detect. I've actually asked about that, because I was convinced that
it meant no one had even looked at it, but I was assured that other articles
had been "edited vociferously."
But, I do have an article in mind. I just don't have time to chase the
research quite yet.
Just as a funny: I have four afpers reading drafts for me at the moment. I
sent them a 200 word finished draft of something and got:
Reader 1 said "I love it"
Reader 2 said nothing
Readers 3 & 4 both told me they disagreed on one point, which I modified,
and they gave me conflicting opinions of a semicolon in the first paragraph.
One said make it a full stop, and the other liked the flow and said a full
stop would break it up too much. I left the semicolon because I like 'em.
I think this is what writing a dissertation will be like, only more so.

Yes it is!

That's going to be difficult. I want edits to be done as easy as possible.
Registering for editing means extra hassle, which discourages people. I
rather spend some extra time spamproofing the thing and cleaning up spam
than make it more difficult to contribute.
On the bright side, the spam issue seems to be mostly under control. One
case in the last 100 edits, and it was dealt with quickly. No real
vandalism so far. So don't let that stop anyone from making a
contribution, please.
